This article will outline several possible solutions for problems with connecting to the internet. These solutions may or may not apply to you, depending on your location. Some solutions may be limited if the issue is with your personal internet at home, as these are not managed by DSI IT. If you are experiencing issues with your internet at home, consider contacting your internet service provider for assistance.

Solution 1 - Restart your device and the router

If you're unable to connect to the internet on only one device, it may be an issue with that device. The best solution to try first is to restart the device that is having issues. If the device is a Windows laptop, be sure to open the start menu, click the power icon and select "Restart" to fully restart the system. If restarting the device does not resolve the issue, see solution 2. If the issue is on all devices on the network, it may be an issue with the router. Some DSI locations will not have routers that you are able to restart. Check with your supervisor if you are unsure where the router is, or if it can be restarted. Before restarting the router, ensure that nobody is currently using the network, so they don't lose any work. To restart the router, locate the power cable that connects the router to the wall, and unplug it for 1 minute. After a minute has passed, plug the router back in and try connecting to the internet again. If you are still having issues, see the next solutions.

Solution 2 - Clear Network Settings

If the issue is only on one device, and you have already performed a restart, the next step will be to clear the network settings, in case they are causing connectivity issues. The process for doing this greatly depends on the device you are using. For Windows devices, open your Wi-Fi settings in the bottom right, find the Wi-Fi connection that is having issues, right click on it and select "Forget". This may resolve the issue without having to reset all network settings. Below are links to support articles for resetting network settings on different devices.

You will need to re-connect to your Wi-Fi after performing this step. If you are still unable to connect to the internet, check the other solutions.

Solution 3 - Check with the Service Provider

Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are regularly performing maintenance on their service. There may be an outage in your area if you are having issues connecting to the internet. Below are links for some common service providers to see if there is an outage. These links will require an internet connection. If you are unable to connect to the internet, consider using a mobile device with a cellular connection.

Some ISPs may not have an easy way to check for an outage. There are some 3rd party websites that can help determine if an outage is in your area, but these are not as reliable. If you suspect an outage, contact your ISP if you own or manage the network. If the network is managed by DSI IT, please create a ticket so that they may contact the ISP on your behalf.

Solution 4 - Factory Reset

If only a single device is having issues connecting to the internet, and you have tried the steps described above, your device may need to be factory reset. If your device is managed by DSI IT, please create a ticket. Do NOT attempt to reset the device yourself, as imporant data may be lost, and this would violate your DSI Equipment Agreement. If your device is not managed by DSI IT, we would recommend checking with the manufacturer before performing a factory reset, as they may have other solutions. Before performing a factory reset, it is recommended to backup and important data that is stored on the device, as it will be lost afterwards.
